Canine retention

Canine retention is a condition in which the canine is fully formed but has not erupted and remains in the bone or under the gum. It is most often caused by lack of space in the tooth row, malposition of the tooth bud, or growth abnormalities.

Retention of canines, especially the upper canines, requires timely diagnosis and treatment, as canines play an important role in bite function and smile aesthetics. Treatment usually includes orthodontic methods (bracket placement) combined with surgical opening of the canine to properly align it into the tooth row.

The patient presented with concerns about dental arch curvature, retention, and dystopia of tooth 1.3. Prior to treatment, a comprehensive diagnostic process was conducted, including condylography and determination of the new position of the mandible. A splint was fabricated for the lower jaw to stabilize its position. Following this, a bracket system with overlays was placed, and a surgical exposure of the impacted canine was performed to facilitate its alignment and normalization.
