Gummy smile treatment
Dental treatment is about aesthetic and one of the disturbing moment can be gummy smile or gingival display. Identification of causes and choice of the correction method is based on the results of diagnostics.
What is gummy smile and why we have to treat it?
A gingival smile, or “gummy smile,” is a condition in which smiling exposes a significant amount of gum beyond the normal aesthetic standard. Typically, a healthy smile shows a small amount of gum – no more than 2 millimeters. If a larger portion of the gums is visible when smiling, it may be perceived as a violation of smile aesthetics.
Although a gingival smile is not a medical problem per se and does not affect the functionality of the teeth or gums, many people seek to correct the condition due to psychological and aesthetic discomfort.
Treatment can significantly improve self-esteem and social interaction by reducing the feeling of self-consciousness when smiling.

Causes of gummy smile
A gummy smile, also known as a “gummy smile,” can occur for a number of reasons that affect the appearance of the smile. Here are the most common factors:
Genetic predisposition
Some people have a natural tendency to have higher gums due to inherited jaw and tooth structure.
Features of the jawbone
A short upper jaw or overly pronounced alveolar prominences can cause the gums to be more prominent when smiling.
Excessive gum length
Gums can be hypertrophied, making them more visible when smiling. This can be due to genetic factors as well as certain gum diseases.
Overactivity of the upper lip muscles
People with more active upper lip lift muscles, which can lead to a higher lip lift when smiling and consequently expose more of the gums.
Misaligned teeth
Crooked or misaligned teeth can alter the tension of the gums, which in some cases contributes to more prominent gum exposure when smiling.
Upper lip length
Too short to cover the gums.
Treatment options
Gum plastic
This is a surgical procedure to correct the shape and size of the gums. During surgery, excess gum tissue is removed or the shape of the gums is corrected to reveal the teeth more aesthetically when smiling. This method is often used to reduce the visibility of the gums and create a more harmonious relationship between the gums and teeth.
Bone plastic
Involves the surgical removal of a portion of the jaw bone. This method is used in more complex cases where it is necessary to change the contour of the bone base to improve the appearance of the smile. It may be required if simple gumplasty does not provide the desired aesthetic result.
Complex treatment brace system + mini-screw till 4-5mm
It involves orthodontic correction of the position of teeth using braces in combination with the placement of mini-screws. The mini-screws serve as additional support points for moving the teeth by 4-5 mm, which makes it possible to achieve the desired result more efficiently and quickly in complex clinical cases.
Complex treatment bone plastic + mini-screw
Combines correction of the bone base through surgical plastics and placement of mini-screws to improve tooth retention and stabilization. This approach is often used to solve particularly complex orthodontic problems where significant changes in tooth position and bone structure are required.
