How do you define the perfect smile? 5 key criteria

Number of visible teeth

In an ideal smile, 8-10 upper teeth are usually visible. They should be symmetrical and harmoniously aligned with the lip line. The upper front teeth (canine to canine) are the most prominent and the lateral premolars support the width of the smile.

Ratio of upper and lower teeth

With a proper bite, the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth (about 1/3). The lower teeth may also be visible in a wide smile, but they should not overlap the upper teeth.

Smile line

The ideal smile line follows the contour of the lower lip. The top edge of the front teeth should follow the curve of the lips, creating a natural and attractive symmetry.

Gum line

When smiling, a minimal part of the gum should be visible (no more than 2-3 mm). If the gums are too prominent (“gum smile”), it can interfere with harmony. A correct gum line smoothly follows the contours of the teeth and is symmetrical.

Proportions of teeth

Teeth should be in proportion to the face and to each other. For example, the front center incisors are usually slightly longer and wider than the side incisors, creating a natural balance. Excessively long or short teeth can look unnatural.

A perfect smile with a proper bite is a harmony of teeth, gums, and facial lines. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional, providing comfort when chewing, speaking, and overall oral health.
