Retainers

Retainers is the final and very important stage of orthodontic treatment. With these invisible mouthguards we achieve great results: they keep the jaw in the correct position and exclude the reverse process.

What are retainers and why are they needed?

Retainers are orthodontic appliances designed to keep teeth in the correct position after the active phase of orthodontic treatment is complete. These appliances play a critical role in the long-term maintenance of the results of the corrected dentition by providing stability and preventing the teeth from returning to their original, undesirable position.

The use of retainers is essential to maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile. They play a key role in preventing additional orthodontic problems that can occur after teeth shift back. In addition, retainers help to maintain an even distribution of pressure in the mouth, which helps the chewing apparatus function properly and prevents wear and tear on the teeth and gums.

Thus, retainers are an integral part of post-orthodontic therapy, ensuring the long-term maintenance of a healthy and aesthetically pleasing smile. They contribute significantly to the health and self-confidence of each patient.

    When retainers should be placed

After completing orthodontic treatment with braces, it’s important to continue to maintain the results you’ve achieved with retainers. Here are some key factors why wearing them is essential.

    Prevention of relapse

Teeth tend to return to their original position after braces are removed. This is a natural process caused by tissue memory. Retainers help hold the teeth in their new position, preventing them from shifting.

    Bone and gum stabilization

After moving teeth, time is needed for the bone and gum tissue around them to stabilize. Retainers help to ensure this by allowing the tissues to adapt to the new position of the teeth and reducing the risk of recurrence.

    Bite fixation

Bite changes achieved with braces also need to be stabilized. Wearing retainers maintains the correct position of the jaw and prevents future problems with the chewing apparatus.

Changes in jaw structure with age

As you age, your jawbones and teeth can become pressurized and shift slightly. Retainers minimize these age-related changes and help keep your teeth straight throughout your life.

    Influence of chewing load

Daily chewing, biting and other mechanical stresses can affect the position of the teeth, especially immediately after braces are removed. Retainers serve as a protective barrier, distributing the stresses and maintaining the stability of the teeth.

    Gingival tissue correction

When teeth move, the gums can change their position slightly and adapt to the new position of the teeth. Retainers help to control this process and ensure that the gums are properly aligned with the teeth.

    Types of retainers

They prevent unwanted tooth movement, preserving the results of orthodontic treatment for many years. There are several basic types of retainers, each with its own features and applications.

    • Removable retainers

Removable retainers allow the user to remove and put them on independently, making them convenient for daily use. They come in several types:

      • Hawley retainer. They consist of a metal wire that encircles the front teeth and a plastic plate that fits over the palate or bottom of the mouth. These retainers are quite durable and can be easily adjusted as needed.
      • Essix retainer. They are made of clear plastic and are similar to whitening mouth guards. They cover all of your teeth while remaining virtually invisible to others.
    • Fixed retainers

Fixed or permanent retainers are fitted by an orthodontist and worn continuously. They have the advantage that the patient cannot lose them or forget to wear them.

      • Fixed wire retainers. A thin metal wire is fixed to the inside of a row of teeth, usually the lower front teeth. This retainer is completely invisible when talking or smiling and provides around-the-clock protection against shifting teeth.
      • Lingual retainers. Similar to fixed wire retainers, but can be used for a wider range of teeth, including the upper teeth. These appliances require special care to prevent plaque buildup and tooth decay.

Stages of retainer placement in our clinic

    01

    Preparation

The first step in the process of retainer placement is a thorough preparation of the oral cavity. Our specialists perform a comprehensive dental cleaning, treat possible carious areas and take measures to strengthen the enamel. This preparation ensures ideal conditions for the placement of the retainers and prevents the development of possible complications.

    02

    Impressions

To create a customized retention system, accurate impressions of the dentition are required. We use special materials that allow us to obtain a detailed reproduction of the anatomical features of the patient's jaw. This process helps to produce the most comfortable and effective retainers.

    03

    Retainer production

Based on the impressions taken, retainers are created in our state-of-the-art dental laboratory. The materials used are hypoallergenic and durable, ensuring that the teeth are held securely in position. Depending on the type of retainer, whether it is a removable mouth guard or a fixed wire system, the fabrication takes into account all requirements for precision and quality.

    04

    Placement of retainers

The final stage is the fixation of the retainers. Non-removable models are fitted on the inside of the teeth using a specialized dental adhesive, ensuring a secure fit and invisibility in everyday life. Removable retainers are customized so that the patient can easily put them on and take them off on their own, and training in their proper use is provided by our specialists.

How long should retainers be worn

The length of time retainers are worn depends on several factors, including the initial condition of the teeth, the complexity of the orthodontic treatment performed, and the type of retainer. Here are some basic recommendations for the length of time that different types of retainers should be worn:

    Removable retainers

    • After braces are removed. During the first phase, which usually lasts 4 to 6 months after braces are removed, removable retainers are recommended to be worn around the clock. This helps the teeth to strengthen in their new position.
    • Long-term use. After an initial phase of heavy use, many orthodontists advise switching to wearing retainers only at night. This regimen can last from several years to indefinitely, depending on the patient’s individual characteristics and the specialist’s recommendations.

    Fixed retainers

    • Long-term wear. Non-removable retainers are generally designed for long-term use. In some cases, they can remain in place for years or even a lifetime. However, periodic checkups with an orthodontist are necessary to monitor the condition of the retainer and prevent potential problems with your teeth and gums.

The importance of wearing retainers consistently

Regardless of the type of retainer, it is extremely important to follow the orthodontist’s recommendations regarding their wearing schedule. Interrupting the process or shortening the recommended wearing time can lead to loss of treatment gains and the need for repeat orthodontic intervention. Regular visits to the orthodontist will help you monitor the condition of your retainers and adjust your treatment plan in time.

"I am afraid of dentists and everything related to dental treatment. But I can confidently say that after 10 years of living in the UAE, I have finally found my dentist. I've had dental hygiene done, and am currently treating my teeth, having visited twice already. Among the perks is a large TV on the ceiling; you can get absorbed in YouTube or even watch a movie, which is cool as it distracts me and eases my anxiety. Once I'm done with my dental treatment, I'll also work with an orthodontist."

All people that work at clinic are also very nice and patient even with this kind of person as me, who always asks so many questions about everything. I’m totally happy with the work that they’ve done and now my husband and his parents are also doing the whole mouth work there! Always happy to recommend DentalDate!"

Can I eat without removing the retainer?

Removable retainers are recommended to be removed at mealtimes to prevent damage and contamination. Non-removable retainers are designed to allow you to eat with them, but you should avoid very hard or sticky foods that can damage the retainer or teeth.

What's the difference between an orthodontic mouth guard and a a retainer?

Orthodontic mouthguards and retainers are both used to correct and maintain the position of teeth, but their purposes are different. Mouthguards are most often used for active correction of the teeth, while retainers are designed to maintain the results of treatment after braces or mouthguards are removed.

How do you properly care for your retainer?

Retainer care includes daily cleaning with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Removable retainers should be cleaned regularly in a denture solution to prevent plaque and bacteria buildup.

What is the cost of retainers in Dubai?

The cost of retainers in Dubai can vary depending on the type of retainer. Transparent removable retainers typically cost between AED 800 and AED 2,000, while fixed retainers can be more expensive, especially if more complex adjustments or specialized materials are required.

How often should the retainer be changed?

The lifespan of a retainer depends on its type and the amount of use. Removable retainers may need to be replaced every few years, depending on the degree of wear. Non-removable retainers, with proper care, can last for many years.

Can retainers cause discomfort or pain?

Retainers may cause some discomfort or a feeling of pressure during the initial wearing phase, which is normal. However, these sensations usually subside after a few days. If the discomfort does not subside, it is important to see an orthodontist to check the fit of the retainer.

Do I need to wear retainers for the rest of my life?

The length of time retainers are worn is determined on an individual basis. Some patients may only need to wear retainers at night for several years, while others may require longer or even constant use to maintain ideal tooth alignment.

    Do retainers affect speech?

At the beginning of wearing retainers, some people may notice slight changes in pronunciation. This is usually temporary and speech returns to normal after a short adaptation period when the tongue gets used to the new conditions.
