The patient was concerned about the appearance of the smile as well as discomfort during chewing. One canine had erupted on the palatal surface — “in a second row,” indicating impaction and a pronounced space deficiency. The facial and dental midlines were not aligned, and the bite was displaced, which over time could have led to increased tooth wear and additional stress on the temporomandibular joint.
After diagnostic evaluation and imaging analysis, it became clear that without creating space in the arch, the tooth would not be able to move into the correct position on its own. An individualized orthodontic treatment plan was developed, and a braces system was placed.
To reposition the impacted tooth, a mini-implant was used. This allowed space to be created in the dental arch in a controlled and safe manner. Subsequently, the arch form was gradually normalized, the teeth were aligned, and the bite was corrected.
Treatment Result
The tooth was successfully brought into the dental arch, smile aesthetics were restored, the dental midlines became symmetrical, and the bite achieved functional alignment. The patient noted a significant increase in confidence when smiling.
Why This Matters
Impacted teeth and palatal eruption are not merely aesthetic concerns. If left untreated, such conditions may lead to:
- bite disturbances and smile asymmetry;
- displacement of adjacent teeth;
- increased load on the temporomandibular joint;
- food impaction and difficulties with oral hygiene;
- increased risk of caries and inflammation due to hard-to-reach areas.
Timely orthodontic treatment helps prevent complications and preserves dental health for many years.
What Patients Should Know
- A tooth that erupts on the palatal side will not reposition itself without creating adequate space.
- Mini-implants are a safe and effective method for controlled tooth movement.
- If discomfort during chewing, smile asymmetry, or the sensation that a tooth is erupting “in the wrong place” occurs, early diagnostic evaluation is essential.
- Correction of such conditions takes less time when treatment begins before neighboring teeth begin to shift.
